West Baldy Trail # 96 – East Baldy Trail # 95 & Crossover Trail
This is probably the best way in the White Mountains. I usually walk the neighborhood a dozen times a year. I like starting are welcomed along the river and up to 100 miles above the valleys of the mountains. The wildlife is fantastic and for 9 months of the year, accessible from the trail heads.
Getting there: There are many ways to reach the head of the road. From Eagar, take US260 west AZturning the Big Lake (261 County Road) follow until you intersect with County Road 273 (Forest Road 113) turn right (west), past the junction of Lake reservation, you first come to the Far East Baldy Trail # 95 heads, go for less than 3 km and you will get the numbers on a new bridge as Sheep Crossing. This is unofficially Baldy Trail # 96 west, south and enter the park near the old bridge. However, if you continue west another 4.1 miles, the official West Baldy# 96 Trail Trail head begins. By Greer, take AZ Northwoods Road to County Road 273, turn left (east) and after a few km to the West Baldy Trail new head just before # 96 Sheeps Crossing. From Alpine, AZ 249 Forest Road (Williamson Valley Road) west towards the Great Lake, intersecting with County Road 273, after the Grand Lake entrance, turn left (west) and go to Sheeps Crossing or up the hill 4 , 1 mile of the current West Baldy Trail # 96 head – THS path hasprimitive rest rooms, no water.
